Williams and Wilmore lifted off aboard Boeing’s Starliner Calypso, expecting a quick trip to the ISS. But shortly after arrival, a thruster failure left NASA with no choice but to delay their return indefinitely. Instead of an eight-day test flight, they became long-term ISS residents while engineers worked tirelessly to fix the issue.

The Long-Awaited Journey Home

After months of uncertainty, NASA finally gave the green light for their return—but not aboard Starliner. Instead, they hitched a ride on SpaceX’s Dragon “Freedom” capsule, which successfully splashed down off the coast of Florida. And in a poetic moment, a pod of dolphins surrounded their capsule, as if welcoming them back to Earth!

The Challenges of Returning to Gravity

After nearly a year in microgravity, returning to Earth isn’t as simple as stepping out of a spaceship. Muscle loss, dizziness, and balance issues are common for astronauts who spend extended time in space. Williams and Wilmore will now undergo NASA’s 45-day rehabilitation program to help their bodies readjust.

Their resilience and patience have earned global recognition. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Williams’ perseverance, while U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at a White House invitation for the astronauts.
